Common Sense: Why Antivirus?

Why does Microsoft NOT have an in-built antivirus program on it’s Windows OS?

Did that ever cross your mind?

I mean, you buy a nice PC or a laptop from a hot-shot brand like HP, Sony or Samsung, with the latest Windows operating system installed on it, only to realize upon booting, that if you don’t install an antivirus software immediately, the moment you go online you will be hit by the computer equivalent of Osama Bin Laden’s anything-american hating wrath. Google it

Google It. Two words that are telling the world everything it needs to know, every second of every minute of every hour of every day. Would we survive without it? We certainly did before Google came around in ’97, but now that we are more or less addicted to it, it would be surprising to come across someone who did not use it barring Warren Buffet of course, who happens to be one of the world’s richest guys owning a small house, a telephone straight from Graham Bell’s desk and a television so flat it resembles a pregnant woman’s womb.

Nevertheless, Google has become that one stop destination where we find all the answers to our world no matter how insanely brilliant or idiotically stupid the question is. Yes, many other search engines have come up over the years but I don’t see anyone ever Wikipedia-ing something, Read the rest of this entry »

The Force One Review

Almost a decade ago, in a Mumbai boardroom filled with not so very famous people at the time, a strategic decision was being taken, on a product that the 60-year-old company was looking to develop. This product had the potential to either make the company, or break it and push it into the oblivion of industry misfortunes. The investment was over 500 crores and required the gutsy go ahead from the top management. Everyone present in that meeting knew, if the plan backfired, it would end the company, but then if it succeeded, it would write a fantastic chapter into the Indian automotive history. One of the men present in that boardroom, was Anand Mahindra and the product they were talking about was, the Scorpio. Almost a decade down the line, the Mahindra Group is a $12 Billion enterprise and the Scorpio is a big reason why they are there.

Success stories like these don’t happen everyday, but when they do, they really do. The Mahindra story happened way back sometime in 1999-2000, but there is another company now, Read the rest of this entry »

Driving the Meanest Maruti Ever: Suzuki Swift 2012

Some say, if you want a hatchback, you go to India, which is the Wal-Mart for small cars. You have cheap hatchbacks, you have expensive hatchbacks, you have small hatchbacks, you have big hatchbacks, you have hatchbacks that catch fire and kill you, and you have hatchbacks that don’t catch fire and don’t kill you. You also have hatchbacks that are nothing like hatchbacks. You have hatchbacks that you can buy after selling a pie and some that you can’t imagine buying, before selling your house, children and wife(s). And just to clear a very important aspect of this article, in case you are a person not from India, a small car doesn’t mean an Audi A4 or a BMW 3 series, it means a third of these cars. A third in size, space and a fifth or less in cost.

If you are looking to buy a small car and reading this for some direction and guidance, stay away from the Tata’s and the Chevy’s. Don’t look beyond a Hyundai, Volkswagen or a Suzuki. The best hatchbacks that you can find from under these Read the rest of this entry »

11 Reasons Why Your Next Computer Has to Be a Mac

The most powerful man on Earth uses a Macbook.

Here are 11 reasons why you should follow the Obama way as well! :)

#1 Macs don’t just hang up. You never ever have to hit the Ctrl + Alt + Del button! In fact, Apple is so confident, there IS no ‘Ctrl’ button on the keyboard. Even if they do (1 in a million chance), in 2 clicks you can quit the program. No stupid blue screens and no shut downs. No tension.

#2 Macs don’t have viruses. Period. No bullshit here. Think of the number of times you have had to run that cumbersome antivirus on your Windows machines? The agony! Time for Read the rest of this entry »

Things to Remember: Road Trips

This is for all those people who have over the years asked me what I do to prepare for my long road trips!

Hope it helps and of course, happy tripping! :)

1. First things first, you will get to nowhere if your car is not running right. Always makes sure your car is well serviced before you leave. Normally, cars have a 10,000 km service interval. So, if you think your car will be due service in-between a trip, it’s always best to have it serviced before you leave. Do note however, that a freshly serviced car should run-in for at least a 100 kms before you embark on a long trip, to be on the safe side of any service errors and to allow the engine to settle in.

2. Make sure your fluids are topped up. You will be surprised the number of times you will have to top up the wiper fluid en-route, thanks to all the 100 mile an hour bug splatter. The wiper will not be alone enough to clean them up, so carry a spare cleaning cloth. The bug splatter becomes Read the rest of this entry »

10 Reasons Why Batman Can’t Fight Crime in Delhi

We have all grown up watching Batman fighting crime and the forces of evil in Gotham city. We still don’t know where Gotham city is! So what would happen if Bruce Wayne decided to shift base to India?

Specifically Delhi.

Here’s why it is a really bad idea.

1. For starters, his Bat-mobile would get to nowhere. It’s too big and he will be stuck in Delhi traffic like there’s no tomorrow. He can’t even take the metro. He is too scared of closed spaces.

2. Because he can’t drive, he will walk and be run over by a drunk guy in a BMW.

3. In case he survives, Delhi’s winter will kill him. Even through that Bat-suit.

4. He can’t really hide in Delhi. Everyone in Delhi is paparazzi. His picture will be on every social network the moment he steps out of his lair.

5. Speaking of lair, where will he build one? Chandni Chowk? He will have to apply for a DDA license before he can call anything home, let alone a lair.

6. We will need sub titles to understand him.

7. India TV will love him. They will be comparing Batman to Shaktiman every evening at 6.

8. Pooja Bhatt would want him starring opposite Sunny Leone in Jism 2 and no one wants that. Plus the Bat-suit is not easy to get out of.

9. Indian criminals are sensible enough to shoot him in the mouth – where there is no suit. They are also smarter than the Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow & Two Face combined.

10. Our corrupt politicians will tag him a ‘national threat’ and a ‘terrorist’, because they will be the ones, he will be after.

Also, if you are from Delhi, then feel free to comment with more reasons why you think Batman can’t fight crime in Delhi! ;-)

Apple Love.

From the time the world started making some innocent sense to me, I was hooked to Windows. The one with the games. Hooked because it could do my math homework which I hated and hooked because it was so unreal for me at the time. A computer pretty much meant Windows and I got mine in the winter of 1999 just a day before Christmas. And then, I screwed it up. I was of course a kid and found myself walking around with a sore on my behind for a week after that. Nevertheless, it was my best friend after coming home from school.

This love for Microsoft lasted for about a decade before I moved to Apple. For 11 years I was an ardent Microsoft supporter, for 11 years I was a Windows boy and for 11 years my loyalty stood harder than the hardest damn places, on and off the face of the earth. But then, everything came crashing down. How? Read the rest of this entry »

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – this is not the plot!

If you were to watch an action movie now, which was made in 1996 you wouldn’t like it. Simply for the fact that the action sequences of those days would look childish today. So when I first sat down to watch Mission Impossible 1 a couple of months back, I hated it. Half an hour was all I could manage. So that was pretty much the end of it. I did not see the rest of the series neither did I finish the first one.

Ghost Protocol just happened last night. Read the rest of this entry »

What I Learned from Steve Jobs

This is something I just came across by Guy Kawasaki.

Many people have explained what one can learn from Steve Jobs. But few, if any, of these people have been inside the tent and experienced first hand what it was like to work with him. I don’t want any lessons to be lost or forgotten, so here is my list of the top twelve lessons that I learned from Steve Jobs. Read the rest of this entry »
